The Story
Tour Toyosu Market With a Family That Has Traded There for Four Generations
Long before Toyosu Market existed — even before Tsukiji — our family was already in the business of trust. Generations ago, in Sendai, our ancestors served as rice merchants to the Date clan, entrusted directly by the lord's household with provisioning one of Japan's most powerful domains. That relationship of trust, built over centuries, is the same currency our family still trades in today — only now, it's tuna instead of rice.

Our house began trading seafood in Tokyo, and today we're in our fourth generation in the business. We are one of only a small number of licensed wholesale intermediaries (nakaoroshi) at Toyosu Market — which means we don't simply visit the market as buyers looking in from outside. We are the market. The tuna and uni you'll see up close on this tour move through relationships our family has built over decades, dealer by dealer, auction by auction.
A Morning Built on Relationships, Not Transactions
At an auction like Toyosu's, price is only part of the story. The real currency is trust — knowing which dealer to ask, which fish to walk away from, and which cut is worth the price being called. Our guides have grown up inside these relationships. When you walk the wholesale floor with us, you're not seeing a market through the eyes of a tour guide reciting facts — you're seeing it through the eyes of a family whose name is known to the dealers standing behind those stalls.

Why We Opened Our Doors to Guests
For four generations, this market was simply where our family worked — unseen by the outside world, understood only by the people who traded here. We began offering private tours because we wanted visitors to experience Toyosu the way we do: not as a spectacle, but as a living, working relationship between people who have trusted each other with something as simple, and as important, as good fish.
What You'll See
Walking the wholesale floor with us, you'll get close to the same seafood our family has traded in for generations — tuna, kinmedai, and more — and hear, firsthand, what separates an exceptional catch from an ordinary one. Afterward, your guide will share a personal recommendation for where to eat the best sushi in Tokyo that day, chosen the same way our family chooses fish: based on relationships, not reviews.
